The True Nature of Sacrifice

It's All About Trust

Do you ever find it challenging to maintain a strong faith when life throws you a curveball? The story of Abraham and Isaac is a perfect example of what it looks like to trust God, even when it seems completely impossible. Let's take a look at Genesis 22 to see how this story of surrender and faith applies today!

Is God Out to Get You?

Do you ever feel like God takes away good things to teach you a lesson? Or that He sends sickness to test you? If you do, you're not alone. But here's the thing: those ideas paint a picture of a God who's distant and maybe even a little mean. James 1:13 tells us that God doesn't tempt anyone with evil. Instead, every trial is a chance to grow, knowing He's right there with us.

Abraham's story isn't about blind obedience to a cruel God. It's about Abraham's deep trust in God's promises. When God asked him to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham's response was incredible. He told his servants, "We'll worship and come right back." That wasn't just wishful thinking; it was complete faith in God's covenant.

The Power of God's Promises

It's easy to think of Abraham as some kind of superhero of faith, right? Which naturally leads you to believe that he was practically perfect. But the truth is, Abraham messed up...big time!

He wasn't always such a great guy. In fact, he was kind of a coward sometimes. Did you know he actually told Sarah to lie about being his wife, not just once, but twice? In Genesis 12 and in Genesis 20 he told her to say she was his sister so that people wouldn't kill him to get to her. Can you believe that?

And guess what? It backfired both times. Sarah ended up being taken by kings who wanted her for themselves. Abraham basically threw Sarah under the bus to save his own skin!

But here's the amazing thing: even though Abraham made some terrible choices, God still used him in powerful ways. Abraham eventually learned to trust God, even when things looked impossible. He knew that God had promised him a son, Isaac, and he held onto that promise, no matter what. And that's what gave him the courage to face the biggest challenge of his life.

Just like Abraham, you're in a covenant relationship with God through Jesus. It's not about perfect performance; it's about God's perfect faithfulness.

When life throws you curveballs – health scares, financial worries, relationship struggles – your response should be rooted in what you know about God's character and His promises.

The Right Kind of Sacrifice

God never intended for Isaac to be sacrificed. He provided a ram instead, showing us He's "Jehovah-Jireh" – The Lord will provide.

Sacrifice isn't about trying to manipulate God or earn His favor. It's about expressing your trust and worship. You don't sacrifice to get God to do something; you offer yourself in surrender because you know Him and trust Him. This shift in perspective changes how you face every challenge.

Faith in God isn’t Blind

Hebrews 11:19 says Abraham "concluded that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead." His faith wasn't blind; it was based on what he knew about God's promises and character.

This kind of faith doesn't ignore problems. It acknowledges them, remembers God's promises, and chooses to trust Him, even when the path is unclear.

Living in Covenant Today

You're in covenant with God through Christ Jesus. Romans 8:28 says that God works everything for your good.

When you face trials, you have a choice: focus on fear or focus on God's promises. Let's respond like Abraham did with Isaac and say, "I don't know how, but God will take care of it."

Try It For A Week

Are you living in full trust of God? Or do you have doubts?

Here's a challenge: For one week, focus on God's promises. When you face a difficulty, remember His character. It's not about denying reality; it's about seeing it through faith.

Remember, every trial is a chance to grow your faith. Choose to stand on God's promises!

Meditate on Your New Covenant

Remember, you are in a new covenant with Christ, a covenant filled with powerful promises. Take time to meditate on these scriptures:

  • Romans 8:31: If God is for us, who can be against us…?
  • Philippians 4:6: Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything…tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done.
  • John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
  • Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
  • 1 Peter 2:9: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Keep adding to this list. What other scriptures speak of your covenant with God?
