Small Choices Matter: What Is Compromise Costing You?

If I walked into your house and asked you to give me your last Oreo, what would you do?

Some of you would hand it over without a second thought. Others would suddenly remember you were saving it for later.

But a few of you would be thinking, “Absolutely not!”

It sounds silly, but that little picture makes an important point.

We all have our own “bag of Oreos.”

It’s that thing we hold onto a little tighter than everything else. Maybe it’s a habit. A relationship. An attitude. A dream. A source of comfort.

It may not even be sinful. But when God begins to put His finger on it, our first instinct is often to protect it instead of surrender it.

That’s when compromise begins.

Compromise isn’t always choosing something evil over something good. More often, it’s choosing our way over God’s. It’s holding tightly to what He’s asked us to place in His hands.

Most people don’t wake up thinking, “How can I compromise today?”

Compromise usually starts with much smaller thoughts:

“This isn’t that big of a deal.”
“Just this once.”
“God understands.”

And before long, what seemed like a small decision begins shaping the direction of our lives.

The Small Choices Shape Us

We tend to think our lives are defined by the big decisions. But more often than not, our lives are shaped by decisions no one else sees.

The attitude we choose when we’re offended.
The words we speak when we’re frustrated.
The temptation we entertain for “just a minute.”

Those little choices aren’t just isolated moments. They’re quietly shaping the kind of person we’re becoming.

Why Does God Require Surrender?

That’s an honest question.

If God loves me, why would He ask me to let go of something I enjoy?

Surrender isn’t about losing something. It’s about trusting Someone.

That’s why Romans 12 calls us to offer our lives as living sacrifices and to allow Him to transform us by renewing our minds.

Notice it doesn’t say to give God the parts that are convenient. It says to give Him your life. Not because He’s trying to take something from you, but because He’s leading you toward something better.

Joshua’s Story Is Our Story

Before Israel entered the Promised Land, God reminded Joshua that victory wouldn’t come through strength alone, but through faithfully obeying His Word (Joshua 1:6-9).

So when Israel faced Jericho, they did exactly as God instructed.

Even though the city looked impossible to conquer, they followed God’s battle plan. They marched. They stayed silent. They trusted.

And you know what happened? The walls of Jericho came crashing down.

The Israelites didn’t win because they were stronger. They won because God was faithful.

Then came Ai.

Compared to Jericho, Ai was a much smaller city. It should have been an easy victory.

Instead, Israel was defeated.

Imagine the confusion. Wasn’t God with them? How could this happen?

The answer wasn’t on the battlefield. It was hidden in the camp.

One man chose to ignore God’s instruction, and one hidden compromise affected an entire nation.

That story isn’t just about ancient Israel. It’s about us.

Compromise rarely destroys a life overnight. It usually begins with one decision, one exception, one justification.

Left unchecked, those small compromises come with big consequences.

God’s Standard Leads to Life

One of the greatest lies we believe is that God’s standards limit our freedom.

The truth is, God’s standards actually protect the life He created us to live.

Like guardrails on a mountain road, His instructions aren’t there to keep us from enjoying the journey. They’re there to keep us from driving over the edge.

So maybe the question isn’t, “God, what do You want from me?”

Maybe it’s this: “God, what do you want for me? And is there anything I’m holding onto that’s keeping me from Your best?”

That question takes humility and trust.

Because every time God asks us to surrender something, He isn’t trying to take life from us. He’s inviting us to experience more of it.

Jesus said He came so that we “may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).

That’s God’s heart for you. The small choices you make today become the life you live tomorrow.

So choose surrender.
Choose trust.
Choose the life only God can give.
