How Jesus Teaches Us to Pray: Real, Honest, and Expectant
When you hear the word prayer, what comes to mind?
For some, it might feel like you’re just talking to the ceiling. For others, it’s a daily ritual. And in today’s world, prayer often gets mocked as powerless or outdated—something people say when they don’t know what else to do.
But what if prayer is more powerful and more personal than we’ve been led to believe?
That’s exactly what Jesus shows us in Matthew 6. Let’s unpack His teaching together.
Stop Performing and Start Praying
Jesus doesn’t jump straight into how to pray. He starts with what prayer is not.
When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly...where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get. — Matthew 6:5 NLT
Jesus isn’t against public prayer. He’s against prayer that’s about performance. Prayer can get hijacked when it becomes about being seen by others instead of being heard by the Father.
Here’s the good news: you and I have a choice. We don’t have to imitate someone else’s style or try to sound spiritual. God wants you—your real words, your real needs, your real heart.
Prayer isn’t a stage. It’s a conversation.
Choose Real Over Rehearsed
Jesus says it this way:
But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. — Matthew 6:6
Prayer is an invitation to intimacy, not performance. You don’t need to put on an act. You don’t need to “sound holy.” Just be you.
He’s not grading your prayer. He’s enjoying your presence.
Inspiration Beats Imitation
Ever caught yourself repeating the same words or phrases over and over, almost like reading a script? Jesus warns against that too:
When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do...Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! — Matthew 6:7–8
Prayer isn’t about impressing God with repetition. It’s not about finding the right words – it’s about finding the right focus. It’s about trusting Him as a loving Father who already knows what you need. That changes everything.
Pray Boldly as a Child of God
This is where it gets powerful. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, you don’t come to God as an unworthy servant begging for scraps. You come to God as His beloved child with full access to your father.
Jesus gives us a model prayer that sets the tone:
This isn’t a formula—it’s a pattern that keeps our eyes on the Father and our hearts aligned with His.
Trade Worry for Peace
Paul echoes this in Philippians 4:6–7:
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.
Prayer isn’t just about asking. It’s also about thanking. And when you do both, you receive something this world can’t give—peace that passes all understanding.
So, How’s Your Prayer Life?
Prayer was never meant to be complicated or scripted. It’s your honest, ongoing conversation with your Father who loves you. When you pray to your Father, expect to receive. He knows what you need, so you can boldly come into His presence with peace.
This week, step into your “secret place,” open up your heart, and expect God to respond. He delights in blessing His children—especially when they come to Him with confidence.

Jesus gives us a model prayer that sets the tone:
- Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. (Start with worship.)
- Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (Seek His perspective.)
- Give us this day our daily bread. (Ask for what you need today.)
- Forgive us…and help us forgive. (Stay free from bitterness.)
- Deliver us from evil. (Live in His protection.)
