How to Stand Firm in a Culture of Compromise

If you’ve ever used any sort of GPS, you’ve probably seen it happen.

You type in where you’re going, and suddenly you have options.

Fastest route.
Avoid tolls.
Less traffic.

Sometimes the difference is only a minute or two, but you still stop and wonder, Which way should I go?

Life has a way of asking that same question.

Every day we’re presented with different paths, different voices, and different ways of thinking. The challenge isn’t finding a path, it’s knowing which one leads where God wants us to go…and then standing firm enough to walk in it.

That’s exactly what God told His people in Jeremiah 6:16:
“Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it.”

More Voices Than Ever Before
We live in a world full of opinions. Open your phone, and someone is telling you what to believe. Turn on the news and someone else has the answer. Scroll social media and you’ll find countless voices competing for your attention.

Everyone has a route they think you should take, but not every path leads to life.

One of the greatest needs in the Church today isn’t more information. It’s more discernment. It’s the ability to recognize God’s voice above every other voice.

It Starts with God’s Presence
It’s easy to become familiar with church. We know when to stand, when to sit, and even when the worship team is about to come back on stage. But God’s presence should never become ordinary.

Throughout Scripture, His presence transformed people, and it still does today.

Because Jesus made a way for us to draw near, worship becomes more than songs we sing. Prayer becomes more than a routine. Church becomes more than something we attend.

It becomes a place where we encounter the living God, and discernment grows in the presence of God.

God’s Instructions Are Still Good
Following Jesus has never been about doing whatever feels right.
It’s about trusting that God’s way is better.

Culture changes.
God’s character doesn’t.

His instructions aren’t outdated—they’re life-giving. Obedience isn’t about earning God’s love; it’s about trusting the One who knows where every path leads.

There will always be pressure to compromise because the easier path often looks more appealing. But God’s instructions and boundaries aren’t meant to keep us from experiencing life, they’re meant to protect us.

When culture changes its definition of truth, God calls us to stand firm in His truth.

Bring Your Own Oil
You may be thinking, “What does that even mean?”

In Jesus’ parable of the ten virgins, five were prepared because they had their own oil. Five assumed someone else would have enough.

The takeaway is simple: you can’t borrow someone else’s relationship with Jesus. Your relationship with Christ is your responsibility, and it goes far beyond showing up for a church service.

A growing faith requires daily disciplines:
  • Opening God’s Word
  • Spending time in prayer
  • Worshiping when no one else is around
  • Choosing obedience one decision at a time

That’s how we prepare for the crossroads before we ever arrive at them.

Which Way Will You Go?
Every day brings another decision. Another voice. Another opportunity to trust God.

When that moment comes, remember Jeremiah 6:16.

Stop.
Look.
Ask.
Walk.

God’s path isn’t always the easiest one, but it has always been, and will always be, the path that leads to life.
